A used Whirlpool refrigerator lists for about $1,135 on our marketplace right now, and most fall between $1,100 and $1,600 depending on configuration and age. A new Whirlpool WRS315SDHM, the 36 inch side-by-side you see in half the kitchens in America, has been on sale for roughly $1,350 to $1,480 at appliance retailers this fall. So the used discount on a Whirlpool is real but modest. The win is not a giant price cut. It is buying a proven, easy-to-fix machine that is already broken in, without waiting on a delivery window.

I help people buy and sell large appliances for a living, and Whirlpool is the brand I am most comfortable recommending used. Not because it is the fanciest. Because when something breaks, the part is cheap, it is in stock, and every technician in the country has fixed it before. Here is which Whirlpool models to look for, the one known defect every buyer in 2026 needs to know about, what to inspect, and what to pay.

Why a Used Whirlpool Refrigerator Is the Safest Secondhand Buy

A used Whirlpool is the safest secondhand refrigerator because its parts are cheap, plentiful, and shared across several brands. That keeps every future repair affordable.

Whirlpool Corporation also builds Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and JennAir refrigerators, and a lot of the guts are common across the family. Fans, ice makers, defrost parts, door gaskets, water valves. When a part is made by the hundreds of thousands, it costs less and ships fast. That is the real test of a used appliance. Not "will it ever break," because everything breaks, but "what happens on the day it does."

The other reason is predictability. Whirlpool's common problems are well documented, so you know exactly what to test before you pay. A machine with known weak points is a much easier buy than one with mysterious ones.

Which Used Whirlpool Refrigerator Model to Look For

Pick the configuration first, then the model. For most kitchens, a Whirlpool side-by-side or French door from the last five to six years is the sweet spot.

These are models that show up regularly in real listings on our marketplace, with the capacities sellers list:

ModelTypeCapacityWho it suits
WRS315SDHMSide-by-side, 36 inchAbout 24.6 cu ftFamilies who want ice and water in the door
WRS321SDHZSide-by-side, 36 inchAbout 24.5 cu ftSame footprint, fingerprint-resistant finish
WRS312SNHMSide-by-side, narrowerAbout 22 cu ftNarrower openings, confirm width on the spec sheet
WRS331SDHMSide-by-side, narrowerAbout 21.4 cu ftSmaller kitchens that still want a dispenser
WRF560SMHZ, WRX986SIHVFrench doorUp to about 26 cu ftFresh-food-heavy households
ET18NK and similarTop freezerAbout 18 cu ftGarage, basement, rental, second fridge

Read the model number from the rating plate, not the listing title. Sellers mislabel configurations all the time. I have seen a Whirlpool listing titled "side-by-side" with photos of a French door unit. Match the photos, the plate, and your opening width before anything else.

If the serial plate is missing, skip it. The serial encodes the build year and week, and a used refrigerator without a provable age is priced like the oldest thing it could be.

The Whirlpool Wire Harness Settlement Every Used Buyer Should Know

Whirlpool-built side-by-side refrigerators made between 2018 and 2021 are part of a class action over door wiring that can break and kill the ice maker, dispensers, and control panel. If you are shopping that vintage, test every in-door feature.

The case is Costa v. Whirlpool Corp. in federal court in Delaware. It alleges that the wire harness running through the door hinge to the in-door ice maker, the ice and water dispensers, and the control panel can break under normal use. It covers side-by-side models sold under the Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir names. According to ServiceMag's coverage, the settlement covers roughly 850,000 owners, with benefits that include cash payments, free repairs and reimbursement of past repair costs. The claim deadline is November 2, 2026, and the official site, RefrigeratorSettlement.com, lists covered models and who qualifies.

What it means for you as a buyer is simple. A 2018 to 2021 Whirlpool side-by-side is not a no. Plenty of them run fine. But you test the dispenser, the ice chute, and every button on the panel, and you open and close the freezer door a dozen times while it runs. Intermittent failures show up when the hinge flexes. Ask the seller if the unit has had any dispenser repair, and ask whether they have filed a claim, because that tells you they already knew about a problem.

How to Inspect a Used Whirlpool Refrigerator

Plug it in, let it run, and spend ten minutes on the four things that actually fail on Whirlpools: the ice maker, the defrost system, the water filter, and the in-door controls.

  1. Ice maker. Ask the seller to run it the day before so the bin is full when you arrive. Slow production or small, hollow cubes usually means a clogged filter or a partially blocked water line, both cheap. No ice at all with water flowing points at the ice maker or the door wiring.
  2. Frost on the back wall of the freezer. A thin, even layer is normal. A thick sheet of ice on the rear panel means the defrost system is not doing its job, often the defrost control, sometimes the heater or sensor. Fixable, but price it in.
  3. Water filter housing. Pull the filter and look for cracks or drips at the housing. A slow leak there puts water on the shelves and under the crispers.
  4. Dispenser and control panel. Press every button. Test water and ice. Then swing the door open and closed and test again. This is the wire harness check.
  5. Temperatures. Thermometers in both sides. After an hour you want 37 to 40 degrees up top and about 0 in the freezer.
  6. Door seals. Close a dollar bill in the door and pull. No resistance means the gasket is worn.
  7. Condenser coils. Pop the bottom grille. Heavy dust and pet hair mean the compressor ran hot for years, and it tells you how the whole machine was kept.

Loud buzzing is worth a pass. Hissing, gurgling, and occasional pops are normal refrigerant and defrost sounds. A steady rattle usually just means the unit is not level, which takes thirty seconds to fix with the front leveling legs.

What to Pay for a Used Whirlpool Refrigerator vs New

Pay around $1,100 to $1,400 for a used Whirlpool side-by-side in good working order, and a little more for French door. Anything near new retail needs to be nearly new.

Here is what the market is actually asking, from Whirlpool listings on our marketplace as of October 2026:

ConfigurationTypical used asking priceCommon range
Side-by-sideAbout $1,135$1,100 to $1,400
French doorAbout $1,300$1,135 to $1,550
Top freezerAbout $1,135$1,135 to $1,330
All Whirlpool refrigeratorsAbout $1,135$1,135 to $1,590

Now compare. A new WRS315SDHM on sale is about $1,350 to $1,480. That puts a used side-by-side a couple hundred dollars under new, not half off. My rule: the older the unit, the bigger the discount has to be. A one or two year old Whirlpool at $1,135 is a fair deal. A seven year old one at the same price is not. And if the seller says "barely used" but the coils are matted with dust, believe the coils.

Our used refrigerator price index tracks these numbers across every brand month to month.

Getting a Used Whirlpool Refrigerator Home in One Piece

Move it upright, tape the doors, protect the floor, and let it stand before plugging it in. Most used fridges that die early were damaged in transit.

Measure every doorway first. A 36 inch side-by-side is about as deep as a standard interior door is wide, so removing the handles, or the doors, is common. Shut off the water supply before pulling the line, and drain what you can. Use an appliance dolly with a strap. Never lay it on its front or back. If it has to go on its side, wait at least as long as it was down before plugging it in, and a full 24 hours if you are unsure, so the compressor oil settles.

Then run it empty for a few hours, dump the first batch of ice, and replace the water filter. A filter of unknown age is the cheapest problem you can eliminate on day one.

Used Whirlpool Refrigerator FAQ

How long does a Whirlpool refrigerator last?

Typically 10 to 15 years with normal care. Top freezers often outlast that because there is so little in them to fail. Side-by-sides with ice and water in the door sit at the shorter end.

Is my used Whirlpool covered by the wire harness settlement?

Maybe. It covers certain side-by-side models built from 2018 to 2021 under Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir. Check the model and serial on RefrigeratorSettlement.com before November 2, 2026. Eligibility rules are set by the settlement, so read them rather than assuming.

Why is my Whirlpool ice maker not making ice?

Start with the cheap stuff. A clogged water filter or a kinked supply line causes most slow-ice complaints. If water flows and there is still no ice, the ice maker or the door wiring is the next suspect.

Are Whirlpool and Maytag refrigerators the same?

Largely, yes. Whirlpool owns Maytag, and many refrigerators share platforms and parts across the brands. That is part of why both are easy to repair used.

What is a fair price for a used Whirlpool side-by-side?

About $1,100 to $1,400 for a clean, working unit a few years old. Older units should sit lower. Near new retail only makes sense for something nearly new.
