Buying a used golf cart

Choose a used golf cart around where you will drive it, how many people it must carry and how you will charge or fuel it. Electric and gas carts have different maintenance needs. A fresh body or new seats tell you little about the battery pack, engine, brakes or frame underneath.

Compare like-for-like carts by model, seating, power source and condition. Any brand table shown here is computed from qualifying Commonplace listings and reports asking prices, not completed sales. A road-use claim needs its own paperwork check, regardless of the asking price.

What used golf carts list for, by brand

Asking prices from qualifying golf cart listings on Commonplace, not final sale prices. Compare battery type and condition, seating and included equipment within each brand.

BrandTypicalRange
Evolution$9,985$7,460 - $11,485
Club Car$8,149$3,735 - $16,399
E-Z-GO$7,485$4,976 - $10,996
Yamaha$6,923$5,453 - $8,614

What to check before buying a used golf cart

Electric or gas power
For an electric cart, check charging operation and performance under load with the correct charger. For gas, ask for a cold start and service records, and check for smoke, leaks, unusual noise and hesitation. Test forward and reverse on either type in a suitable area.
Battery type, age and installation
Identify lead-acid or lithium batteries and ask for installation dates and receipts. Flooded lead-acid batteries need watering and terminal care; check maintenance records and corrosion. Lithium packs do not need watering, but still need a compatible charger and sound installation. For a conversion, confirm compatibility with the cart manufacturer or installer. Age alone does not establish remaining capacity.
Seating and load capacity
Decide whether you need 2, 4 or 6 seats, then confirm the manufacturer's passenger and load ratings for the exact configuration. Inspect seat mounts, handholds and any fitted restraints. An added rear seat does not by itself establish a higher permitted load or road-use approval.
Brakes, steering, tires and frame
Check braking, the parking brake, steering play, suspension, tire wear and frame corrosion. Look underneath for damage or poorly attached accessories. Have an independent technician investigate faults before buying rather than judging condition from the body panels alone.
Paperwork and intended road use
A golf cart is not automatically a street-legal low-speed vehicle. Verify the vehicle identification, certification and any title or registration, then check the rules for the roads you intend to use with your state motor-vehicle agency and local authority. Lights or a seller's street-legal label alone are not enough.

Where used golf carts are listed

These states have qualifying listings. Confirm transport availability and unloading access for the individual cart and your address.

Common questions

Should I buy an electric or gas golf cart?

Consider charging access, intended use and maintenance. An electric cart needs a suitable charging location and a healthy battery system. A gas cart needs fuel and engine servicing. Inspect the actual cart and its records rather than assuming one power source is always the better used purchase.

How do I compare lead-acid and lithium golf cart batteries?

Check the battery type, installation date, charger and condition under load. Flooded lead-acid batteries require watering; lithium packs do not. Ask for service records and, for a lithium conversion, documentation that the pack, charger and cart are compatible. Do not assume a battery is healthy just because the dashboard shows a full charge.

How old is too old for a golf cart battery?

There is no single age cutoff that proves a pack is usable. Read the date codes and replacement receipts, then have capacity and performance checked under load. Storage, charging and maintenance history matter alongside age. Get a replacement quote for the exact pack if its condition is uncertain.

Can I drive a used golf cart on the street?

That depends on the vehicle and state and local rules. A golf cart and a certified low-speed vehicle are different classifications. Before buying for road use, verify the paperwork and ask the relevant authorities about permitted roads, equipment, registration, insurance and driver requirements.

Should I choose a 2, 4 or 6 seat golf cart?

Choose for the passengers and cargo you expect to carry, then confirm the rated capacity of that configuration. More seats also change the space needed for storage and transport. Check any rear-seat conversion and its effect on the permitted load with the manufacturer.

How much does a used golf cart cost?

Compare current asking prices for similar power sources, seating and condition. When enough qualifying listings exist, the brand table summarizes their asking prices. Battery replacement, repairs, transport and any road-use requirements should be checked separately for the cart you choose.
