Ari Kimmelfeld on the Minimalist Moms Podcast: why winter brings more people listing fitness equipment and more people shopping for it to use at home.

Short answer: It can be. Ari Kimmelfeld said winter is when people hunker down at home, and Commonplace saw an uptick in both people listing equipment and people shopping for it to use at home. With fewer events on the calendar, people also notice what in the house is useful and what is clutter.
Host Diane Boden asked this on the Minimalist Moms Podcast in an episode that aired in February 2026: "Do you notice that people tend to want to get rid of things in the winter? Do you think this is a good time of year to get rid of things?"
Winter is typically a time where people can take that as an opportunity to hunker down, whether it's getting on a treadmill or spending more time at home just because it's cold outside. And so because of that, we are seeing an uptick in traffic, in both people listing their products and also people wanting products that they can use at home, for a discount and without the hassle of having to go out in the snow to pick something up that they might find on a marketplace.

I think people have a little bit more time on their calendars. There aren't as many weddings, there aren't as many social events. You're spending more time at home, and so you're thinking about what's in your home or what shouldn't be in your home a little bit more.

Spring is the epitome of the transition, but I think winter is... you're even more conscious about the function of your home and the things that are in your home, whether they're practically adding something or taking something away, like adding clutter. So it's not as sharp of a change, where people are reinventing, like spring cleaning, but I think it's healthy.

Ari said winter is less of a sharp change than spring cleaning, but healthy. Spending more time at home makes you more conscious of the function of each thing in it.
No. When equipment sells on Commonplace, a crew comes to you, takes it apart, and carries it out, so a buyer never has to haul it home through the snow.
