A 2022 Club Car Onward sells used for right around $11,074 in the middle of the market, and a 2017 to 2020 car in good shape lands closer to $9,186. That spread of roughly $2,000 across five model years is the whole reason this guide exists, because the year on the listing is the least important number on it. Seats, powertrain, lift and whether the car left the factory as a titled vehicle move the price far more than the model year does.

I help people buy and sell used golf carts for a living. I have watched hundreds of Club Car Onwards get inspected, loaded and delivered, and the pattern rarely changes: buyers shop the color and the seat count, then find out after the fact that they bought a lead-acid car when they wanted lithium, or a lifted car that will not fit in the garage. So here is the whole thing in plain terms. Trims, powertrains, real used prices, the street legal question, what breaks, and how the Onward compares to the Tempo and the Precedent.

Club Car Onward trims: 2, 4, and 6 passengers, lifted or not

The Onward is one platform sold in three lengths and two ride heights, and that is the entire trim structure. Everything else is an option box.

Club Car launched the Onward in 2017 as the consumer version of the car it had sold to golf courses for years. Same rustproof aluminum frame, different body, different intent. The 2-passenger is the classic cart footprint. The 4-passenger adds a rear-facing flip seat that folds down into a cargo bed, which is what most families end up with. The 6-passenger stretches the frame to three forward rows, and it is a genuinely large vehicle.

Lifted is the other axis. A factory-lifted Onward gets a suspension lift and larger all-terrain tires, which buys ground clearance for grass, gravel and curbs. It also raises the step-in height and the overall height, and that is the part people forget. Measure your garage door before you fall in love with a lifted 6-passenger.

My blunt take: the 4-passenger lifted is the most useful used Onward for most buyers, and the 6-passenger is the one people regret buying if they do not actually have six people. It is harder to park, harder to store and harder to sell later.

Onward HP Lithium vs the lead-acid Club Car Onward

Buy the lithium car if the price gap is under about $1,500, because that is roughly what you will spend fixing the lead-acid one.

Club Car sells the Onward three ways: a 48-volt electric car on flooded lead-acid batteries, the HP Li-Ion car on a lithium pack, and a fuel-injected gas car. On the used market the HP lithium cars carry a median of about $11,373 against $10,748 for Onwards overall, so the premium at resale is smaller than the difference in what you actually get.

Lead-acid gives you four to six years if you water it monthly and charge it after every ride. Lithium gives you eight to ten years or more and asks for nothing. A 48-volt lead-acid pack also weighs 350 to 400 pounds against roughly 100 to 130 for lithium, which changes how the car climbs a hill and how hard it is on the brakes. I go through the full comparison in the golf cart battery guide, including what a replacement pack runs.

The gas Onward is the odd one out. It is fuel injected rather than carbureted, so it starts reliably without the carburetor fiddling older gas carts were famous for. Buy it if you have acreage, no convenient outlet, or a habit of driving past an electric car's range. Otherwise the electric car is quieter and cheaper to run, and gas Onwards hold a median around $11,248 anyway.

What a used Club Car Onward costs in 2026

The middle of the used Club Car Onward market sits at about $10,748, with real transactions running from roughly $5,685 for an early 2-passenger car to just over $18,000 for a current-year lithium LSV.

Here is how that breaks down by the variables that actually move price. These are median asking and selling figures from Onward listings that have moved through our own platform, not manufacturer numbers.

ConfigurationMedian used priceTypical range
2017 to 2020 model years$9,186$5,685 to $10,748
2021 to 2022 model years$11,074$7,348 to $16,873
2023 and newer$12,622$9,373 to $18,241
HP Lithium$11,373$7,348 to $17,399
Gas$11,248$8,498 to $13,828
4-passenger$10,748$7,778 to $17,399
6-passenger$14,564$12,899 to $15,748
Factory LSV, street legal$13,186$7,778 to $17,399

Two things jump out. The 6-passenger carries a real premium, about $3,800 over a 4-passenger, and the factory LSV cars carry another one. Both survive depreciation, which is worth knowing whether you are buying or selling.

For context, the median used Club Car of any model sits near $6,998 and the median for all used golf carts is about $7,935. The Onward runs roughly $3,000 above the brand average because it is the consumer model, not a retired fleet car. The wider picture is in how much a used golf cart costs.

Is a Club Car Onward street legal?

Only if it left the factory as an LSV with a 17-digit VIN. A light kit does not make a cart street legal, and this is where more Onward deals fall apart than anywhere else.

A Low Speed Vehicle is a federal category, not a feature list. The car has to top out above 20 mph but at or below 25, carry a manufacturer-assigned VIN, and meet the equipment requirements in FMVSS 500: headlamps, turn signals front and rear, brake lights that trigger off the brake, reflectors, mirrors, a parking brake, certified automotive glazing in the windshield, and seat belts at every seating position. Club Car builds factory LSV versions of the Onward with that VIN already riveted on. Somebody's garage conversion does not have one, and in many states it never will.

So when a listing says "street legal," ask for a photo of the VIN plate and the title. No title means you are buying a golf car with accessories. That may be fine if your neighborhood permits carts on posted streets, but it is a different purchase at a different price. The full breakdown, including which states assign a VIN to a converted cart, is in the street legal golf cart guide.

What actually breaks on a Club Car Onward

Batteries first, throttle sensor second, and almost nothing structural. The aluminum frame is the reason these cars survive a decade in Florida and Arizona without turning to rust.

The failures I see, in order of how often they show up and how much they cost:

Batteries are the big one. A tired lead-acid pack is a $900 to $1,700 job, a lithium replacement runs $1,800 to $3,500, and a seller who calls the batteries "fine" without a load test is telling you what they hope, not what they know. Charge the car fully, then drive it up a hill. A pack that sags under load is done, whatever the meter said in the driveway.

The throttle sensor Club Car calls the MCOR is the second most common item. Symptoms are hesitation off the line, surging, or a car that will not move at all while everything else looks alive. It is not an expensive part, but it will fail an inspection and it should come off the price.

After that the list gets cheap: crunchy charger receptacles, solenoids that click without engaging, cracked acrylic windshields, faded seat vinyl, squeaky bushings. None of those should scare you off a car. They are bargaining chips.

What I almost never see on an Onward is frame corrosion, and that matters more than any of the above. On a steel-framed cart, rust on the frame rails is the one problem worth walking away from. Club Car took that failure mode off the table, which is a large part of why used Onwards hold value.

Club Car Onward vs Tempo vs Precedent

The Onward is the consumer car, the Tempo is the current fleet car, and the Precedent is the old fleet car. Buy the Onward if you want a vehicle. Buy a Tempo or Precedent if you want a cheap, simple machine for a property.

That distinction is worth about $4,000. Used Precedents sit near a $6,936 median and used Tempos near $6,842, against $10,748 for an Onward. All three share Club Car's aluminum frame and much of the same running gear, so reliability is not the deciding factor. The Onward's money goes into the body, the lighting, the seating options, the LSV path and the finish.

Here is the honest version. If the cart will live on five acres and haul mulch, a used Precedent is one of the best values out there and you should buy one. If it will carry your family to the pool or down a public street, buy the Onward. A retired fleet car in a neighborhood always looks like what it is.

If you are still deciding across brands rather than models, I compared the three big names in Club Car vs EZGO vs Yamaha.

How to pick the right used Club Car Onward

Work through these in order. They are ranked by how much money each one saves you.

  1. Decide lithium or lead-acid before you shop. It is the single biggest cost variable, and it is not something you can change your mind about cheaply after delivery.
  2. Count the seats you will actually use. A 6-passenger costs around $3,800 more than a 4-passenger, stores badly and sells slower. Buy the length you need.
  3. Settle the street legal question in writing. Factory LSV with a VIN and a title, or not. Do not accept a verbal answer, and price the car accordingly.
  4. Measure your garage, then measure the car. Lifted cars are taller and longer than buyers expect, and a 6-passenger lifted Onward will not clear some residential doors.
  5. Load test the batteries, do not eyeball them. Full charge, then a hill. Anything else is guessing at the most expensive part of the car.
  6. Drive it from a standstill three or four times. Hesitation or surge off the line points at the throttle sensor, and you want that discovered before payment, not after.
  7. Check the frame anyway. Aluminum does not rust, but the steel brackets, the rear leaf springs and the lift hardware on a lifted car all can.

That is a lot to verify from a phone photo, which is why our drivers inspect every cart before it goes on the truck and you get time with it at delivery before you pay. The full checklist is in the golf cart inspection checklist, and the process is spelled out in how it works.

Frequently asked questions about the Club Car Onward

What is the difference between a Club Car Onward and a Precedent?

The Onward is built for consumers and the Precedent was built for golf courses. They share the aluminum frame and much of the drivetrain, but the Onward gets the automotive-style body, the lighting packages, the seating configurations and the factory LSV option. That is worth roughly $3,800 on the used market.

How long does a Club Car Onward last?

Longer than most owners keep it. The aluminum frame does not rust, which removes the failure that ends most steel-framed carts. Plan on replacing a lead-acid battery pack every four to six years, or a lithium pack every eight to ten, and treat everything else as maintenance.

Is the Onward HP Lithium worth the extra money used?

Yes, at anything under about a $1,500 premium. You are buying eight to ten years of pack life instead of four to six, about 250 pounds less weight, and no watering. The used market only charges about $600 more for it, which makes it one of the easier calls in this category.

What does a 2022 Club Car Onward sell for used?

About $11,074 in the middle of the market, with 2021 and 2022 cars trading between roughly $7,348 and $16,873 depending on seats, lift, powertrain and whether the car is a titled LSV.

Can you make a Club Car Onward street legal after you buy it?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on your state. Eight of the nine federal equipment requirements can be bolted on. The VIN cannot, and some states will only title a car that left the factory as an LSV. Call your state DMV before you spend anything on a conversion kit.

How much does it cost to ship a golf cart?

Less than towing it yourself once you price a trailer rental and a hitch, and far less than the damage from strapping down a 1,200 pound vehicle incorrectly. We quote delivery up front as part of the listing, so the number you see is the number you pay.

If you have an Onward in the garage and you are done with it, now beats next spring. Carts depreciate on a calendar, and the configurations that hold value best are the ones buyers are shopping for right now. We handle the pickup, the inspection and the payment, and nobody comes to your house to kick the tires. Start at how to sell a golf cart.

And if you are buying, do not overpay for a model year. Pay for the pack, the seat count and the title. A 2019 lithium 4-passenger bought right at $9,500 will outlast and out-drive a 2023 lead-acid car bought wrong at $12,500, and it will be worth more when you sell it.
