Golf Cart Inspection Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy Used

Before you buy a used golf cart, run this checklist: battery pack, charger, motor, frame, brakes, paperwork, and what each failure is worth off the price.

A decent used golf cart sells for somewhere between $4,000 and $9,000, and on a lead-acid cart roughly $1,200 of that is sitting in the battery tray waiting to die. That is the whole problem in one sentence. When you buy used golf cart listings, you are not really buying a vehicle. You are buying a battery pack, a controller, and a frame, and only one of those three is easy to look at.

I help people buy and sell large, heavy, awkward things for a living, and golf carts are where the gap between "looks great" and "is great" is widest. A repaint and new seat covers cost a seller a few hundred dollars. A tired 48V pack costs you $1,400 six weeks later. So here is the checklist: what to test, in what order, what a pass looks like, and what to knock off the price when something fails.

Start With the Serial Number, Not the Paint

Read the serial number before you look at anything else, because it sets your expectations for everything downstream.

Serial plates hide in predictable places. On a Club Car Precedent or DS, look inside the passenger-side glove box or on the frame rail behind the driver-side rear wheel. On an E-Z-GO TXT, lift the passenger seat or check the glove box area. On a Yamaha Drive or Drive2, it is stamped on the frame under the front body. Photograph it, then decode it before you drive out, because a seller who says "it's about a 2019" is often describing a 2013.

The Battery Pack Is Most of the Deal

On an electric cart the battery pack is the most expensive thing that can be wrong, so test it first and test it cold.

Cold matters. Ask the seller not to charge it the morning you arrive, because a pack fresh off an eight-hour charge shows a beautiful surface voltage that vanishes under load.

Bring a $15 multimeter and check resting pack voltage across the whole string. A healthy fully-charged 48V lead-acid pack reads about 50.9 to 51 volts. A 36V pack reads about 38 volts. Then check each battery individually. Six 8V batteries should read roughly 8.4 to 8.5 volts each and, more importantly, they should be within about 0.2 volts of one another. One battery reading a half volt low is the whole pack's future. Lead-acid batteries fail as a group, and a single weak cell drags the rest down within a season.

Pop the caps on flooded batteries. You want water above the plates, clean terminals, and no white or blue crust. Heavy corrosion means the pack has been boiling off electrolyte, so it is older on the inside than the sticker suggests. Check the date codes stamped on each case while you are in there. Lead-acid packs last four to six years in normal residential use. If the codes are five years old, price the cart as if it needs batteries, because it does.

Lithium is a different conversation. A lithium cart should show a battery management readout, hold voltage under load without sagging, and come with documentation if the conversion was not factory. Test the Charger, Because Sellers Forget It Exists

Plug the charger in while you are standing there and confirm it completes a cycle.

This sounds trivial. It is not. Chargers are the most commonly forgotten item in a used cart sale, and a replacement runs $300 to $650. On older Club Car Precedent 48V carts an onboard computer sits in the loop, and when it gets confused the charger will not kick on at all even though nothing is broken. Watch it click over and draw current before you believe "yeah, it charges fine."

Motor, Controller, and What the Test Drive Should Tell You

The test drive is a load test, not a joyride, so drive it up the steepest hill you can find. Flat ground hides everything. Under real load you are listening for four things:

  • Voltage sag. A healthy pack holds on a climb. A tired pack drops several volts and the cart slows to a crawl halfway up.
  • Motor whine or grinding. A faint whine is normal. A rising metallic grind under load is bearings, and that is a rebuild.
  • Hesitation off the line. A stutter when you press the pedal points at the solenoid or the throttle sensor. Both are cheap parts, and both are what sellers describe as "it just needs a tune-up."
  • A burnt electrical smell. Walk away. Controllers run $400 to $900 and a cooked one usually means something else cooked with it.

Also check rollback: stop on the hill, lift your foot, and see whether the cart holds. On a gas cart the checklist shifts. Cold-start it yourself instead of arriving to a warm engine. Watch for blue exhaust smoke, listen for valve clatter, check the oil for a milky look. Frame, Suspension, Tires, and Brakes

Get on the ground and look at the frame, because frame rot is the one problem that makes a cart not worth fixing.

Club Car has used aluminum frames on the DS and Precedent for decades, which is why those carts survive salt-belt life so well. Many E-Z-GO and Yamaha models use steel. Steel is fine. Rusted-through steel is not. Check the rear frame rails, under the floorboard, the battery tray, and the bag-rack mounts. Surface rust is cosmetic. Flaking rust that leaves orange dust on your fingers is structural, and that cart is a parts cart no matter how good the seats look.

Suspension is quick. Push down hard on each corner. It should settle in one bounce, and the rear leaf springs should sit level. Check lift kits carefully, because a lift installed without matching longer brake cables causes ongoing problems.

Tires tell you about the previous owner. Read the DOT date code on the sidewall. Cracked sidewalls with plenty of tread left means the cart sat outside for years, so the seats, wiring, and batteries lived through the same weather. Uneven front wear means alignment or worn kingpin bushings.

Brakes on most carts are mechanical drums on cables. Roll forward and stop hard. The pedal should be firm and both rear wheels should grab evenly. A long-travel pedal is usually cable adjustment. A hard pull to one side is a seized cable or a contaminated shoe, and that is a wheel-off job.

Street Legal Paperwork Is Its Own Inspection

A cart is only street legal if it is titled and equipped as a low speed vehicle, and a seller calling it "street ready" means nothing legally.

The federal LSV definition requires a top speed above 20 mph and no more than 25 mph, plus headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, a horn, mirrors, a windshield, seat belts, reflectors, and a 17-digit VIN. Most states add registration, a title, and insurance. A standard cart topping out at 14 mph with a light bar bolted on is not an LSV, and no accessory package makes it one.

So ask three questions in order. Does it have a 17-digit VIN? Is there a title in the seller's name? Has it ever been registered? What Each Failure Is Actually Worth

Failing a check is not automatically a reason to walk. It is a reason to reprice. These are the numbers I would start from, in the order that matters:

  1. Lead-acid pack over four years old: subtract $1,200 to $1,600. That is a full replacement set installed on a 48V cart, and it is the biggest hidden cost when you buy used golf cart inventory from a private seller.
  2. No charger, or the wrong charger: subtract $350 to $650. Confirm a replacement exists for that platform before you agree.
  3. Controller or motor symptoms: subtract $500 to $1,200, or walk. If the cart is otherwise excellent and cheap, a controller is manageable. If it is priced like a good cart, do not take the project on.
  4. Tires at end of life: subtract $400 to $700. A set of four with mounting is real money, and cracked sidewalls on a lifted cart are a safety issue rather than a cosmetic one.
  5. Brake work: subtract $200 to $450. Cables, shoes, and adjustment on both rear wheels.
  6. Sold as street legal with no title: subtract 25% to 35%. Pay private-property money for a private-property cart.
  7. Cosmetics only: subtract almost nothing. Faded panels, torn seats, and a dead gauge are the cheapest problems here, and a $180 seat kit is not worth losing a mechanically clean cart over.

How to Skip Most of This

All of that assumes the normal version of this: 90 minutes to a stranger's driveway with a multimeter, hoping the seller is honest about the date codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many years should a used golf cart's batteries last?

Four to six years for lead-acid, and eight to ten or more for lithium. Fleet carts get charged daily and age faster, so a three-year-old ex-course cart can be closer to a six-year-old private cart in battery terms. Read the date codes, not the model year.
