The usable capacity row is the one people miss. A lead-acid battery should not be run below about 50 percent state of charge if you want full golf cart battery life out of it. Lithium can be run down much further without harm. So a lithium pack with the same nominal amp hours gives you close to double the real range, which is why a conversion feels like a bigger upgrade than the spec sheet suggests.
Weight matters more than you would think too. Dropping 250 pounds out of a cart makes it quicker, easier on the brakes, and better on hills.
Lead-acid still wins on one thing: the up-front number. If you are keeping the cart two more years and then selling, a fresh flooded pack is the rational choice. If you plan to keep it, lithium is cheaper per year and it is not close.

Signs your golf cart batteries are dying

The first symptom is almost always range, not a failure to start.
Watch for these, roughly in the order they show up:
- Shorter range. A cart that used to do the whole neighborhood now needs a charge halfway through. This is the earliest and most reliable signal.
- Dying on hills. The cart pulls fine on flat ground and falls on its face going up an incline. That is voltage sag under load, and it means the pack is near the end.
- Longer charge times, or a charger that never shuts off. A healthy pack reaches full and the charger clicks off. A tired pack keeps drawing.
- Faster charge times. Sounds like the opposite problem, but a pack that charges suspiciously fast has lost capacity. There is less to fill.
- Needing water constantly. Flooded batteries that boil off water every couple of weeks are being overcharged or failing internally.
- Heat and swelling. Batteries hot to the touch after charging, or cases that look bulged, are done. Stop charging them.
The reliable test is a voltmeter. Let the cart sit a few hours after charging, then read each battery individually. A fully charged 8-volt battery should rest around 8.4 volts, a 6-volt around 6.3. One reading noticeably lower than the rest is the classic single bad cell, and it drags down the whole pack. On a flooded set, a hydrometer will tell you the same story cell by cell.
Here is the hard part: you almost always replace the whole set. One new battery among five tired ones gets pulled down to their level. Mixing new and old, or lead-acid and lithium, is how people buy the same pack twice.
How to make lead-acid batteries last longer

Charge after every use and keep the water level above the plates. That is 90 percent of it.
Everything else is detail, but the details are cheap:
- Charge after every ride, even a short one. Do not wait until the pack is low.
- Check water monthly during use, and only add distilled water, never tap.
- Fill after charging, not before. The electrolyte expands while charging and will overflow if you topped it off first.
- Clean the terminals twice a year with a wire brush and baking soda, then coat them with terminal protectant.
- For winter storage, charge fully, disconnect, and either top up monthly or leave it on a maintainer. A pack stored at partial charge through a cold winter can lose a year of golf cart battery life in one season.
Lithium skips all of this. No watering, no equalizing, no terminal corrosion, no monthly checks. The one rule with lithium is cold: most packs will not accept a charge below freezing unless they have internal heating, so charge before the garage drops below 32 degrees.
Should you convert to lithium?
Convert if you are keeping the cart more than three years. Otherwise buy lead-acid and move on.

Checking the batteries before you buy a used cart
Assume any used electric cart needs batteries unless the seller proves otherwise.
That is not cynicism, it is arithmetic. Packs last four to six years and carts last twenty, so most used carts on the market are in the back half of a battery life. Here is what to do before you pay:
Ask for the date codes. Every lead-acid battery has a manufacture date stamped or stickered on it, usually a letter for the month and a digit for the year. If the seller does not know when they were replaced, lift the seat and read them yourself.
Look at the tops. Clean terminals and clear water levels mean somebody maintained the cart. Crust and dry cells mean nobody did, and that tells you about the rest of the vehicle too.
Drive it up a hill on a partial charge. Anything drives fine at full charge on flat pavement. You learn the truth at 60 percent charge going uphill.
Watch the charger. Plug it in and see whether it engages and whether the amp draw settles. A charger that will not initiate often means pack voltage has fallen below what it can recognize.
