Short answer: Start early and list the big pieces first. On Commonplace listing is free, buyers reserve with a $1 deposit, and a crew inspects the piece, carries it out, and pays you at pickup. If moving day comes before it sells, Store to Sell keeps it listed from storage.

Avery Cundill asked this on The Declutter Queen after describing a move where the couches, a piano, and heavy wooden furniture were left until the last two days: "Is there another way, perhaps a better way, of decluttering these larger items, whether it's for a move or just to get rid of them?"

Why heavy furniture is the last thing to go

Because it's a big item, you then have to figure out how you're going to haul it. Sometimes it's down a few flights of stairs and then it's into a truck. In New York City, most people don't have trucks or cars. And so then you have to rent a U-Haul... And you're also meeting up with a stranger.

What Ari suggested

So we basically manage all of that. Sellers get paid right away. Buyers just place a $1 deposit to place an order on something, and they can pay the rest on delivery. We do a 30 to 50 point inspection pre-pickup, as well as on pickup.

Three steps before moving day

  1. List the big pieces first. Avery's lesson: they are the hardest to place, and two days before the truck is too late. Listing is free on the furniture sell page.
  2. Let the crew do the carrying. When it sells, a crew inspects it, takes it down the stairs, and pays you at pickup by Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or bank transfer.
  3. Still listed on moving day? Use Store to Sell instead of a storage unit you keep paying for.

Putting it all into a storage unit just makes it more difficult to actually declutter later, because now you're just endlessly paying for a storage unit, when maybe a good number of those items can be sold and should be sold, but you're not going to be there to meet up with the buyer.

How do I sell heavy furniture before a move?

Start early and list the big pieces first. On Commonplace listing is free, buyers reserve with a $1 deposit, and a crew inspects the piece, carries it out, and pays you at pickup. If moving day comes before it sells, Store to Sell keeps it listed from storage.

Why won't anyone take my free couch?

Free is not the problem. The hauling is. Avery Cundill found that free listings can get no bites, and donation crews may skip heavy pieces. Ari Kimmelfeld said the hard part is everything around the sale: the stairs, the truck, and meeting a stranger. Take that work off the buyer and the couch can sell.

Should I put furniture in storage if it doesn't sell before I move?

Plain storage means paying every month and deciding later. With Store to Sell, Commonplace stores the piece and lists it. When it sells, Commonplace picks it up from storage and sends your payout digitally, so you never meet a buyer.
