Bryan purchased the Tonal 1 brand new in 2023. He paid about $4,495 for the machine plus tax and installation, bringing the total close to $5,000. The unit came with the full accessory kit that includes the smart handles, smart bar, bench, workout mat, roller, rope, and wall-mount hardware.

He says the machine has worked without any issues since the day it was installed. Bryan had never owned gym equipment before and was drawn to the Tonal after hearing his brother talk about it. As a runner who never liked traditional gyms, he found the guided programs useful at first and used the system on and off for full-body sessions.

The Tonal 1 provides up to 200 pounds of electromagnetic resistance. Bryan notes he never came close to that limit even on more advanced programs. He adds that the subscription, which runs about $60 to $65 a month, is what gives the system its real value through coaching and tracking.

Over time his schedule changed. Travel increased after COVID and the machine saw less use. With fewer than fifty sessions on the unit, it remains in excellent condition with no signs of wear. Bryan decided to sell because he needs the room for a home office.

He kept every original accessory and the wall-mount hardware. The system has never required maintenance or shown error codes. Bryan mentions that the average user will find plenty of resistance without needing the higher capacity of later models.

The full conversation

The complete interview, lightly cleaned up for reading:

Commonplace: Is this Brian?

Bryan: Yes.

Commonplace: Sorry about missing your call the other minute. But I was just from Commonplace about your tonal.

Bryan: Oh, no. Not a no problem. No problem. Yes.

Commonplace: So one thing we like to do, if it's okay with you, is just ask a couple of questions, you know, from the current owner about the condition that it's in, like, why they're selling it, some of the highlights and best features of it, just so you don't have to, like, answer a bunch of the same questions over and over again like you might on some other platforms. So we kind of just get it all out there, put it on the listing, and then anybody looking at it gets, like, all the information all at once. So if that's okay with you, just, you know, I can ask you a few questions about it.

Bryan: Sounds good.

Commonplace: Alright, Brian. So tell me a little bit, you know, when you were buying it, when was it, how much did you pay for it, and what condition is it's in? Like, was there any maintenance, anything wrong with it?

Bryan: No. I bought it brand new. So in '23 2023. I don't remember the exact month. But and then it was obviously in brand new condition, worked great, and has worked great ever since. Actually, I've never had a never had a problem with it. And I think I think I put the list I think it was $40.44 95 or something like that, 4,495, and then there was some, you know, additional tax and installation. In the end, I spent about $5 on it total.

Commonplace: That makes that makes sense. And did you get the, like, accessories package?

Bryan: I did. So it's got the the two little handles, the rope, the bar, the bench, and then, like, a roller that came with it as well, like, one of the you know, so you can you know, on your side or whatever. A little I a little else you call it. You know? And the and the small the pad or whatever that came with it as well. We install I put a much bigger pad down, but I have the pad that came with it as well.

Commonplace: And for anybody that, you know, is into Tonal for the first time, like, that kit is not cheap. I think it's, like, 5 or $600.

Bryan: That was with with the accessory kit and everything.

Commonplace: So tell me a little bit, you know, for anybody looking into Tonal for the first time, you know, isn't so familiar with it but is curious about it, just, like, give me the the Tonal experience. Like, what's the app like? What'd you like about it? You know, for for anybody really, like, curious about it but doesn't wanna, you know, buy a new one, is interested in a used one for about half off, like, give them the pitch on tonal.

Bryan: That's what's the pitch I get. Well, I was sold on it. I'll just tell you. So my brother uses it a lot. He lives in a different state, and he was he's he still uses it a lot, and he was just oohing and on over the thing, basically. So and I've never been a gym guy. I was always, like, a runner. So I never liked going to the gym, and so thought we'll try it. And so we bought it and installed it, And it works great. I mean, for what it is, I think it's you know, you have to have the app and the the subscription to it. So I think, you know, people looking into it should know that. You you can use it without it, but it but it to me, it it loses a lot of its value.

Commonplace: You know how much that cost?

Bryan: The value is in the the coaching and the programs and stuff.

Commonplace: In the process?

Bryan: So I think it it's it's best with that subscription. And, yeah, and so then that that that's how it it started out. And I started using it a fair amount kind of on and off. And then now I just don't I'm finding myself not using it. You know, life is kind of back to normal, so to speak, you know, post COVID and traveling and so on. And and we're actually looking to make a change in our house. So we're ultimately, I'm gonna move my home office into the room that we currently have set aside as this gym that we don't use, basically. So I'm needing the space. So there's nothing in particular wrong with the tonal. It's just we don't use it, and I'm gonna repurpose that room as a as a home office, basically.

Commonplace: Makes makes perfect sense. But there's nothing wrong with the total.

Bryan: It works great. It works great.

Commonplace: What's the what's the cost of the subscription?

Bryan: Oh, I don't recall, to be honest with you. It was, like, $60.65 bucks a month or something along those lines. $60 a month. Somewhere in there.

Commonplace: Got it. And would you say that this, like, comes close to, like, a home gym or, like, a gym replacement? Like, because that's pretty much close to, like, a a gym membership. So, like, can you get, like, all your workouts through this?

Bryan: Yes. You can do an an amazing amount of stuff, and there's just tons of different programs and tons of different levels too. So just I didn't use it that enough to literally move, like, much more than, like, the intermediate levels, but they have advanced levels. And like I said, my brother uses it a lot, and he's in into all the advanced levels and stuff. And you can definitely get a full full workout with this thing.

Commonplace: And and, like, just the just so, you know, whoever is looking at this knows that with Commonplace, we do the full disassembly. So we, you know, take it off your wall, and then we do the full reassembly. So whoever is buying this, they're gonna you know, we're obviously gonna make sure everything is working and there are no issues with it. And it's gonna be hassle free for you, but it's also gonna be hassle free for them. We do the full installation. We show them how everything works. We help them sign up if if that's what they're interested in, which you do recommend. So, you know, like, let's just cover the basics. Let's just make sure that there are no error codes, no glitches, like, no issues with the camera or, like, you know, anything with the ropes. Everything is smooth. Everything is good. Just let's get that out of the way.

Bryan: Absolutely.

Commonplace: And and it has all the accessories, like you mentioned, you know, in the beginning. So this is, like, really an insane deal for anybody interested in a tonal. I think the only difference between the tonal one and the tonal two is just the weight capacity. I think it's, like, from 200 to 250 pounds.

Bryan: That's my understanding as well.

Commonplace: So for Right.

Bryan: And and a lot of people I was actually on, like, online tonal community where, you know, some of the the ones that are, you know, just super dedicated and and crazy about it were discussing whether it's worth upgrading to a two. And a lot of people are like, no. I I wouldn't based on based on just that. Right now, if your total dies or whatever, you know, people are like, hey. That it's great to have the extra capacity, but I can tell you I've got I was nowhere near the the capacity on this thing. And and my brother, he's not a huge guy, but he's been working on on it a lot. There's still plenty of room in terms of the maximum weight. So it it to me, it'd be a pretty rare thing to need that extra weight, in my opinion. But, you you know, so the the average person is gonna find plenty of resistance with this thing.

Commonplace: I mean, that's that's that's awesome. Well, Brian, this was great. Thanks so much for for giving us the time. We'll add this to the listing. We'll also post it on some of our social media if that's okay with you. And we'll just try to get it sold as as soon as possible.

Bryan: That's great. That's awesome. You know, I I I appreciate it. It seemed like a good route to go. I was obviously thinking about, like, the face Facebook marketplace route and all that, but I think the fact that you guys uninstall it and reinstall it, and it'll just make it smooth for both seller and buyer.

Commonplace: And just just so you know, so, you know, there are no strangers showing up to your house. We do the full disinstallation, and then you get paid before anything leaves your property. So whatever you prefer, whether it's Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, bank transfer, we do it, you know, pretty much instantaneously before you know, we'll do the inspection first. But before anything gets dismounted, you get paid. We then, you know, load it up onto the truck and then deliver it. And if anything happens to the delivery, that's a notch. We'll replace it for the customer, obviously. But it's everything is final sale, so nothing's coming back to you, you know, if worst case scenario, something happens. Of course. Alright, Brian. Thanks so much for doing this, and and have a great rest of your day.

Bryan: Same to you. Thank you.

Commonplace: Appreciate it.
