Commonplace FAQ's

Trust & Safety

Is Commonplace legit? How do I know this isn’t a scam?

Commonplace is a verified marketplace for used gym equipment and wellness products, featured in major publications including TechCrunch, CNBC, and the New York Post. Unlike Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, you never meet strangers or pay sellers directly. Every transaction is protected by our company guarantee: you pay just $1 upfront, and we only process your full payment after the equipment is delivered, assembled, and tested in your home.

As Kacie Cope shared in her recent review: “I really thought this was a scam at first- but after talking with the team I decided to give it a try. Everything was excellent and easy. Highly recommend and will certainly use them in the future.”

Our nationwide logistics network has completed thousands of deliveries with professional, background-checked drivers who specialize in fitness equipment installation. Bottom line: we’ve built our reputation on making sure you get exactly what you ordered, in excellent condition, or you don’t pay.

What makes Commonplace different from Facebook Marketplace?

Commonplace eliminates the biggest headaches of buying used Pelotons, Tonals, and other gym equipment on Facebook Marketplace. You never coordinate meetups with strangers, figure out transportation, or wonder if you’re getting scammed. We’re both payments-enabled and delivery-enabled, which means you checkout securely with a credit card (not handing cash to a stranger), and our professional logistics team handles 100% of the pickup, delivery, and installation.

Muna Shikaki put it perfectly: “I was initially very skeptical of buying a used Peloton on the site, but it worked out perfectly! The delivery team was timely, courteous, and super helpful with setting up the bike and teaching me how to use it. So much better than trying to get a truck and set it up myself.”

Every item goes through our rigorous 30-point inspection before delivery—something you’d never get buying peer-to-peer. Plus, even after delivery fees, you’re typically saving 40-90% off retail prices.

How does your inspection process work?

Every piece of equipment sold on Commonplace undergoes a comprehensive 30-point inspection checklist at pickup. Our drivers are trained specialists in fitness equipment—not just general movers. When inspecting a Peloton, they verify the touchscreen functionality, check for clicking noises, test resistance levels, examine the frame for damage, verify all components are original, and ensure the equipment matches the listing photos. For hot tubs, we use a 50-point checklist and employ hot tub specialists.

As sivan mussaffi shared: “Got such a good deal on the peloton bike. Came in great condition and was door to door service. Norman was amazing— he helped set up the bike completely, made sure it was working and balanced perfectly.”

We guarantee on the company that we only deliver items in excellent condition—if something doesn’t pass inspection, we don’t pick it up and the sale is canceled. No exceptions.

What if the equipment arrives damaged or doesn’t work?

You have complete buyer protection. When our drivers deliver your equipment, they’ll fully assemble it and help you test it on the spot while they’re still there. If anything seems off—broken parts, malfunctioning screens, unusual noises—you can reject the delivery immediately and we’ll process a full refund. You’re never charged the full amount until you give us the thumbs up.

Dianne Goodbar shares her experience: “Absolutely great experience getting my Peloton Tread+!! Nethaniel walked me through the process – I was a little nervous about it making such a big purchase without testing the equipment myself. He reassured me my purchase was secure.”

We also offer optional warranty coverage for up to one year. Even without the warranty, if something malfunctions within the first two weeks, we’ll send our service team out complimentary to make it right. We stand behind every delivery.

Are your delivery drivers background-checked?

Yes. All drivers in our nationwide logistics network undergo background checks and specialized training. We don’t use random contractors—our drivers complete certification courses for specific equipment types. To deliver Tonals, a driver must complete our Tonal installation course and become an expert in wall-mounting systems. For hot tubs, drivers are certified in electrical hookup and plumbing connections.

Customers consistently praise our team’s professionalism. Meir Fink noted: “Had an amazing experience with Commonplace, Nethaniel and Uri both were amazing from start to finish, highly recommended!” And Farzam Kamel added: “Great experience. They were very professional and friendly.”

Every driver is vetted, insured, and trained to provide white-glove service. These aren’t strangers from the internet—they’re professionals who do this every day.

Can I just pick up the item myself to avoid the delivery fee?

We only offer professional delivery service—no self-pickup is available. Here’s why: sellers list on Commonplace specifically because they don’t want strangers coming to their homes or dealing with pickup coordination. For you as a buyer, self-pickup might seem cheaper upfront, but it often costs more when you factor in truck rental ($75-150), gas for long distances, tolls, a full day of your time, and the physical risk of moving 300+ lb equipment.

As Muna Shikaki experienced: “So much better than trying to get a truck and set it up myself.”

Plus, if you pick it up yourself and discover a problem later, you’re stuck with it. Our delivery includes professional inspection, transportation, installation, and buyer protection—ensuring you get exactly what you paid for. And remember, even with the delivery fee, you’re typically saving 40-90% off retail.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery fees are calculated based on distance between the seller’s location and your home. For example, a Peloton Bike delivery within 50 miles might cost $150-$210, while a delivery from 260 miles away could run around $240-$260. The fee compensates our logistics team for round-trip mileage, professional equipment handling, full assembly, and installation time. We display the exact delivery cost before you checkout, so there are no surprises.

Here’s the thing: even after the delivery fee, you’re typically saving 40-90% compared to buying new. A $500 Bike+ with a $240 delivery fee is still $740 total—that’s $1,700+ in savings compared to Peloton’s retail price.

How long does delivery take?

We aim for same-day or next-day delivery whenever possible, though most deliveries are completed within 1-3 days of your order depending on everyone’s availability.

Malka Kaufman shares her experience: “I placed the order in the morning and had my order delivered that evening. Excellent service! This is the first time I used Commonplace and would definitely buy there again.”

Craig Kaiser had a similar experience: “I bought a peloton tread and had it delivered within 48 hours. Norman had it set up and working properly in 45 minutes. Definitely, a 5 star experience.”

Once you place your order, our logistics team will text both you and the seller to coordinate schedules. We offer flexible delivery windows including weekends, evenings, and early mornings to work around your schedule. For buyers recovering from surgery or traveling for work, we’ll hold your order and schedule delivery whenever you’re ready—zero pressure.

What’s included in white-glove delivery?

White-glove delivery means our team handles everything—and we mean everything. They arrive at the seller’s location, disassemble the equipment if needed, run the full 30-point inspection, carefully load it into the truck, and transport it to you. At your home, they unload, carry it inside (upstairs if necessary), place it exactly where you want it, fully assemble it, level it, help you set up your Peloton/Tonal account, connect it to WiFi, and walk you through basic features.

Thomas Bowens confirms: “Service was Great, came on time and Installed. I would recommend this service to anyone no hassle.”

Evan Goldstein called it: “Fast and thoughtful delivery.”

For Tonals, this includes professional wall-mounting with stud-finding and secure installation. For hot tubs, it includes placement, leveling, and setup guidance. You literally don’t lift a finger—just point to where you want it and we take care of the rest.

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes. Our logistics network covers the entire United States, from New York to Los Angeles to Montana, Alabama, and everywhere in between. We’ve successfully delivered Pelotons, Rows, Tonals, and hot tubs to customers over 800 miles away. While longer distances do increase delivery fees, many customers find it worthwhile because they’re accessing inventory they couldn’t find locally and getting our guaranteed inspection and installation service. Plus, even with a higher delivery fee for distance, you’re still typically saving 40-90% off retail.

What if I need to reschedule delivery?

No problem at all. Since you only pay $1 at checkout, there’s no penalty for rescheduling. Once you place your order, our logistics team will contact you to find a delivery window that works with your schedule. If something comes up—you’re traveling for work, you had surgery, or you just need a different day—simply let the logistics team know and they’ll coordinate a new time with the seller. We’ve worked with firefighters, healthcare workers, and other professionals with unpredictable schedules. We get it, and we’ll work around you.

Can you deliver to apartments or upstairs locations?

Absolutely. Our white-glove delivery includes carrying equipment upstairs, navigating tight hallways, and maneuvering into apartments.

Alexandra Sassoon shares: “Super fast and efficient pickup- was able sell my peloton within a day of posting it. Very nice guys who left our apartment in perfect shape and transported it down 5 flights of stairs.”

Let our logistics team know during scheduling if you have stairs, narrow doorways, or other access challenges so they can plan accordingly. There’s no additional fee for stairs—it’s all included in the delivery service. Our team has delivered Pelotons to fifth-floor walkups in Brooklyn and Tonals to second-floor condos in LA. If there’s a will, there’s a way.

When do I get paid?

You get paid immediately after our drivers complete the pickup inspection and confirm your equipment is in excellent condition. Once the drivers verify everything matches your listing description and passes our 30-point checklist, we release payment to you on the spot—you don’t have to wait for the buyer to receive delivery.

Edyrelis Vargas experienced this: “Super easy, efficient and seamless process. Everything was great from listing the item, the pick up, and the payment. They made everything stress free and pleasant. 100% recommend!”

This is one of the biggest benefits of selling on Commonplace versus Facebook Marketplace, where you might wait days for a buyer to show up, or worse, deal with no-shows and flaky buyers. We show up when we say we will, and you get paid instantly.

How does the $1 payment hold work?

When you checkout on Commonplace, you’re only charged $1 immediately—think of it as a refundable reservation deposit. This $1 charge confirms you’re a serious buyer and holds the item for you so no one else can purchase it. The remaining balance stays authorized on your credit or debit card but isn’t charged until after delivery. Once our drivers deliver the equipment, assemble it, and you test it out and confirm you’re happy, only then do we process the full payment. If you reject the delivery for any reason, you’re only out $1. It’s that simple.

Why do I have to pay the $1 if I’m paying the full amount later anyway?

The $1 hold serves two purposes: it confirms your payment method is valid, and it reserves the item exclusively for you. We put ourselves in your shoes—we understand you’re paying for something you haven’t seen yet. Instead of requiring 100% payment upfront (like most online marketplaces), we only ask for $1 so you can verify the equipment’s condition in person before we charge your card. This builds trust and gives you complete control. You can also choose to pay 100% at checkout if you prefer, but most buyers appreciate the $1 option because it’s zero risk on their end.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, and financing options. We do not accept cash, checks. All payments are processed securely through our platform—you never send money directly to the seller. This protects both parties and ensures you have buyer protection through your credit card company if any issues arise. No meeting strangers and handing over cash—everything is traceable and secure.

Do you charge my card the full amount and then refund it if I don’t accept delivery?

No. We only charge the $1, then process the actual charge after you approve the equipment. You’ll see two separate transactions: the initial $1 charge at checkout, and then the remaining balance charged only after you’ve tested the equipment and given our drivers the go-ahead.

Can I make an offer on a listing below the asking price?

Absolutely. Most listings on Commonplace have a “Make an Offer” button next to the “Buy Now” button. You can submit any offer you’d like, and we’ll reach out to the seller on your behalf to see if they’ll accept, counter, or decline.

Jennifer Dooley, a seller, appreciated this feature: “The offer and counteroffer feature was simple to use. I loved being able to text with the team throughout the process.”

Here’s the important part: even if a seller accepts your offer, you’re not obligated to purchase—you can still walk away if you change your mind. We’ve successfully negotiated hundreds of price reductions for buyers, especially on items that have been listed for several days. Worth a shot, right?

How do I find equipment in my area?

Visit trycommonplace.com and enter your zip code in the location search bar on the homepage. This will show you all available equipment within range of your location. You can then filter by product type (Peloton Bike, Bike+, Row, Tonal, Hot Tub, etc.), price range, and condition. We add new listings daily from sellers nationwide, so if you don’t see what you want today, check back regularly—popular items like Peloton Bike+ models under $500 typically sell within 24 hours. First come, first served.

Shloimy Gold sums it up: “Easy, quick, perfect descriptions. Fast delivery.”

Why are some items cross-listed on Facebook Marketplace?

We actively advertise our sellers’ listings on other platforms like Facebook Marketplace to give them maximum exposure and faster sales. When you see a listing on Facebook, it’s actually hosted on Commonplace—the Facebook post just directs interested buyers to us. This benefits sellers by reaching more buyers, and it benefits you because you get Commonplace’s professional delivery and inspection service instead of meeting a stranger and hauling equipment yourself. You get the convenience of finding it on Facebook with the safety and professionalism of Commonplace.

What does “excellent condition” actually mean?

Excellent condition on Commonplace means the equipment is fully functional with minimal cosmetic wear, low usage history (often under 50-100 rides/workouts), and passes our rigorous 30-point inspection. For Pelotons, this means the touchscreen is flawless, there are no clicking or grinding noises, all resistance levels work smoothly, the frame has no cracks or rust, and all original components are present. We verify usage history through the serial number and manufacturer data.

As sivan mussaffi confirmed: “Came in great condition and was door to door service. Norman was amazing— he helped set up the bike completely, made sure it was working and balanced perfectly.”

If an item has higher usage or cosmetic imperfections, we clearly disclose that in the listing. We’re not here to surprise you—what you see is what you get.

Can I see the serial number or usage history before buying?

Yes. If you ask our team before purchasing, we can provide the serial number so you can verify the equipment’s history independently. We also display total ride counts, workout counts, or hours of use directly in many listings. During the inspection process, our drivers verify this data matches what the seller claimed. Transparency is critical to building trust, so we’re happy to provide any documentation you need to feel confident in your purchase. Just ask.

What if the item I want is 800 miles away?

We can deliver equipment from 800+ miles away, but the delivery fee will be higher (potentially $600-800+ depending on the item size). In most cases, we recommend looking at closer alternatives to save on delivery costs. However, if you’re searching for a rare item (like a specific Peloton Row model or a hot tub with particular features), the distance might be worth it. We’ll calculate the exact delivery cost before you checkout so you can make an informed decision. Sometimes a listing 800 miles away with a high delivery fee is still 40-70% cheaper than buying new—you just have to do the math.

Do items come with accessories?

Many listings include accessories like cycling shoes, weights, mats, heart rate monitors, or resistance bands. These are clearly noted in the listing description. Additionally, Commonplace often runs promotions where you can choose free accessories with your purchase (recent examples: bike fans, massage guns, heart rate monitors). Even if a listing doesn’t include accessories, you’re often saving $1,000+ compared to buying new, so you can purchase accessories separately and still come out way ahead financially.

How quickly do popular items sell?

High-demand items like Peloton Bike+ models under $500, low-mileage Rows, or Tonals under $2,000 often receive multiple inquiries within hours of being listed and sell within 24-48 hours.

Alexandra Sassoon experienced this firsthand as a seller: “Super fast and efficient pickup- was able sell my peloton within a day of posting it.”

If you see something you want at a great price, we recommend placing the $1 hold immediately to reserve it. You can always cancel if you change your mind, but waiting even a few hours can mean losing out to another buyer. These deals move fast.

How do I list my equipment for sale?

Visit trycommonplace.com and click “Sell Stuff” (or the equivalent listing button). You’ll create a listing by uploading photos, entering your equipment’s model and serial number, describing its condition, and setting your asking price. We verify the serial number against manufacturer data to confirm condition and usage history. Once your listing is approved and published, we’ll automatically advertise it on Commonplace and cross-list it to Facebook Marketplace and other platforms for maximum exposure. More eyeballs, faster sale.

Jennifer Dooley shares: “This website made selling my Peloton treadmill incredibly easy from start to finish. The account setup was quick, the selling process was straightforward, and the offer and counteroffer feature was simple to use.”

Do you charge sellers a fee?

There is no upfront fee to list your equipment. At the listing confirmation page, you’ll see an optional promotion service: for 1% of your listing price (e.g., $40 on a $4,000 hot tub), we’ll run targeted advertising across multiple platforms to sell your item faster. This is completely optional—we’ll still actively work to sell your equipment even if you decline the promotion. Our standard marketplace fee is built into the transaction and disclosed at the time of listing. No hidden surprises.

What if a buyer makes a lowball offer?

You have complete control over pricing. When a buyer submits an offer through our platform, we’ll contact you to see if you want to accept, decline, or counter. You’re never obligated to accept any offer. Many sellers price items slightly higher knowing buyers may negotiate, and we facilitate that conversation professionally. If you receive an offer that’s too low, we’ll advocate for your desired price or suggest a counteroffer that’s fair to both parties. Your call, always.

Do I have to be home for pickup?

Yes, you’ll need to coordinate a pickup time with our logistics team when you’re available to be present. Our drivers will arrive at the scheduled time, inspect the equipment thoroughly, handle all disassembly and loading, and pay you immediately. The pickup typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on the equipment type.

Simpson shares her selling experience: “I recently sold my 2023 Tonal through them and the entire experience was great. The staff was fantastic from start to finish. Once a buyer was interested they facilitated the sale quickly and easily.”

We work with your schedule—evenings, weekends, or weekdays—to find a convenient time. We’re flexible because we know you have a life.

What happens if my equipment doesn’t pass inspection?

If our drivers arrive and discover the equipment doesn’t match your listing description, has mechanical issues you didn’t disclose, or is in worse condition than “excellent,” they will not complete the pickup and the sale will be canceled. This protects buyers from misrepresented items and protects our company’s reputation. We encourage sellers to be completely transparent about condition, usage, and any flaws. Minor cosmetic wear is fine as long as it’s disclosed—what matters is functionality and honesty. Be straight with us and we’ll get your equipment sold.

Still have questions? Text or call our team, or browse our marketplace at trycommonplace.com. We’re here to make buying and selling premium fitness equipment safe, easy, and ridiculously affordable.
