Methodology

Where the numbers come from. Figures are computed from Tonal listings on the Commonplace marketplace across major U.S. metros. We report medians, not averages, so a handful of mispriced listings can't move the number.

Publication standards. Headline figures require at least 30 underlying listings; sub-breakdowns (brand, condition, configuration) require at least 15, and samples of 15–29 are flagged "smaller sample." Anything below the bar is marked "not reported" rather than estimated. Prices are rounded to the nearest $25. Data is reported on a two-week lag. Typical range = the middle 50% of listings (25th–75th percentile).

The index. Category indexes track the median asking price over time, indexed to a fixed base month = 100. Index values are unitless by design and comparable across every edition of this report.

What we don't publish. Listing counts, sales volumes, and transaction-level data are not disclosed. Journalists and researchers can request custom cuts at press@trycommonplace.com.
