Most of the vintage golf carts for sale in 2026 trade between $900 and $2,500 running, which is roughly a fifth of what a new lithium cart costs. A 1998 Club Car DS that starts, steers, and holds a charge is a genuinely useful vehicle for $1,500. The catch is that the price on the listing is almost never the price you end up paying, because on a 20 or 25 year old cart the batteries are usually the next thing to go.
I help people buy and sell golf carts for a living, and older carts are a big share of what moves. I have watched a lot of buyers fall in love with a $900 project cart and then spend $2,800 getting it right. So here is the honest version: how old is too old, which vintage golf carts are actually collectible, what breaks first, whether you can still get parts, and when restoring beats just buying something newer.
Age barely matters on a golf cart. Model platform and frame material matter enormously.
This is the thing that surprises people coming from cars. A golf cart is a simple machine: a frame, a motor or a small engine, a controller, a steering rack, and a pack of batteries. Almost every component on it is replaceable, and most of them are still being manufactured. A 1995 cart with a good frame is a better buy than a 2012 cart with a rotted one.
So the real dividing line is not the year, it is the frame. Club Car DS models use an aluminum frame, and aluminum does not rust. That is why you still see 30 year old DS carts working every day in Florida and Arizona while newer steel-framed carts have crumbled. E-Z-GO TXT and Yamaha G-series carts use steel frames, which are perfectly fine if the cart lived somewhere dry and are a serious problem if it lived near salt water.
The second dividing line is voltage. Older carts, particularly pre-1995 electrics, are often 36 volt. Newer ones are 48 volt. A 36 volt cart is slower, less efficient, and the controllers are getting harder to source. It is not disqualifying. It is a reason to pay less.
Almost none of them. That is the unglamorous truth, and it saves people a lot of money.
There is a real collector market, but it is narrow. Harley-Davidson built golf carts from the early 1960s into the early 1980s, including the distinctive three-wheelers, and those genuinely appreciate. Clean examples trade in the thousands and restored ones go higher. Cushman carts have a following for the same reason. Early Club Car Caroche models and a handful of oddball mid-century electrics get collector attention too.
Everything else is just used. A 1997 Club Car DS is a good, durable, plentiful cart, and it will never be worth more than it is today. The same goes for the E-Z-GO TXT and the Yamaha G16. These are the Honda Civics of the cart world: excellent to own, terrible investments.
The exception is the custom market. A well-executed restomod, meaning a vintage body on a rebuilt drivetrain with lithium batteries, upgraded suspension, and good paint, can bring $5,000 to $9,000. But that value comes from the build, not the age. You are being paid for the work, and only if the work is good.

Note the gap between the third row and the last. A running 2003 Yamaha and a 2021 street-legal lithium cart do the same basic job, and one costs four times the other. Batteries. Always batteries. On an old electric cart, the battery pack is the single biggest expense you will face and it is usually overdue when you buy.
Here is the failure order I see, most common first:
On gas carts, swap the top of that list for the carburetor, the starter generator, and the clutch. Gas carts from Club Car and E-Z-GO of this era mostly used Kawasaki-built engines, and those engines are tough. The fuel system around them is what gums up after a few years of sitting. Yes, easily, and this is the best news in the whole guide. Parts availability for the big three is excellent and the aftermarket is enormous.
Club Car DS, E-Z-GO TXT, and Yamaha G-series carts were built by the hundreds of thousands over long production runs with very few platform changes. That means brake shoes, bushings, cables, controllers, solenoids, motors, body panels, seat kits, and complete front-end rebuild kits are all sitting on shelves right now. You can rebuild a 1996 DS almost entirely from new parts.
Where it gets thin is the odd stuff. Original-spec 36 volt controllers, discontinued dash trim, correct-color factory body panels, and anything specific to a low-volume model or a single model year. For a genuine collectible cart, originality matters and finding correct parts is the whole hobby. For a work-a-day 1998 DS, nobody cares if the seat is aftermarket.
One practical warning. Cheap no-name replacement parts are everywhere for these platforms, and quality varies wildly. On brakes, cables, and anything electrical, buy the known brand. On a plastic body panel, buy whatever is cheapest.
Restoring almost never saves money. It buys you exactly the cart you want, which is a different thing.
Run the math on a typical project. You buy a $1,000 running-but-tired 1999 Club Car DS. Then:
You are at $3,500 to $5,700 all in, and that is with you doing the labor. A lithium conversion instead of lead acid adds $1,500 to $3,000 on top. For that same $4,000 to $6,000 you could buy a clean 2016 to 2019 cart that already works and already has a warranty history.
So restore if you want the specific cart, enjoy the work, or already own the thing. Buy newer if you just want to drive to the pool. Both are reasonable. Just do not tell yourself the restoration is the frugal option, because it is not. Drive it up a hill with two people on board. That one test tells you more than every other check combined.
A weak battery pack looks perfectly fine on flat ground with one person aboard, and then dies embarrassingly on the first incline under load. If the seller has an excuse for why you cannot do this, the excuse is the answer.
Beyond that: get under the cart with a flashlight and look hard at the frame rails and the spring hangers, especially on steel-framed E-Z-GO and Yamaha carts. Surface rust is fine, flaking layers are not, and anything you can push a screwdriver through is a walk-away. Pull the seat and look at the batteries: check the date codes stamped on the cases, look for corrosion and swelling, and check the water levels if they are the fillable type. Ask when the pack was last replaced and treat a vague answer as a no.

Buying an old cart sight unseen is where most of the pain in this category comes from. On Commonplace you never meet the seller. Usually yes, if the frame is sound. The mechanical and electrical parts on a Club Car DS, E-Z-GO TXT, or Yamaha G-series cart are all replaceable and widely available, so a tired 20 year old cart with a good frame is a fixable cart. A rusted frame is not fixable at any sensible price. Check the frame first and everything else second.
Decades, with maintenance. There are 1980s Club Car DS carts still in daily service because the aluminum frame does not rot and every wearing part has been replaced at least once. What ends a cart is almost always frame corrosion or an owner who decides the next repair is not worth it, not the cart wearing out as a whole.
The Club Car DS. It is not close. The aluminum frame is the reason, and the enormous parts supply is the follow-up reason. If you want an older cart that will still be running in ten years and you do not care about badges, look for a DS in the 1995 to 2005 range.
Budget $700 to $1,200 for a six-battery lead acid pack installed in 2026, or $1,500 to $3,000 for a lithium conversion. Lithium costs more up front, weighs far less, charges faster, and typically lasts two to three times as long, so on a cart you plan to keep it usually wins on total cost.
Sometimes, and it is rarely worth it on a very old cart. Low-speed vehicle rules generally require the cart to reach around 20 to 25 mph and carry headlights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, a windshield, and a VIN. Most 36 volt vintage carts cannot hit the speed requirement without a motor and controller swap, which puts you deep into the cost of a newer cart that already qualifies.
