July 31, 2026

Considering a used Boston Whaler 13 Sport for sale? This 1989 model, priced at $11,275, is more than just a boat; it’s a turnkey experience, ready for the water.

I’m Ari Kimmelfeld from Commonplace. We built this whole marketplace because buying big used stuff like this boat is usually a pain. So we went deep on this listing, talking directly to the owner, to get you the real story.

We interviewed the owner of this 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport. Watch the full walkthrough.

We talked to the owner, so you don’t have to guess

The current owner bought this 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport about four years ago for his youngest son, ensuring a known history for its next buyer.

Buying used boats often feels like a gamble. Especially when you’re looking at a $11,275 investment. You worry about hidden issues or sellers disappearing after the sale. That uncertainty keeps good deals from happening.

But we personally spoke with this owner. He bought this 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport about four years ago for his youngest son, and he’s upfront about pouring $8,000 into it since then. So you know the history, and you know why he’s selling it now (his son wants a wakeboarding boat), giving you confidence.

A meticulously maintained 1989 hull with a brand-new engine

This 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport hull has seen significant upgrades, including fiberglass repair, a new rub rail, and a brand new 2025 Suzuki 30 horsepower engine installed last year.

An older hull can mean hidden problems, right? You see ‘1989’ and think ‘project boat’. That kind of age often means you’re buying someone else’s headache. But not here.

This hull had fiberglass repair done, and the rub rail around the border of the boat was replaced. Then, last year, the owner dropped in a brand new 2025 Suzuki 30 horsepower engine. Yeah, he said ‘2025.’ It’s a new engine, fresh from the factory last year, with all new controls, new steering, and a new throttle. Plus, he installed a GPS with a fish finder. The boat is

Comes with its own trailer, ready for transport

This 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport includes a dedicated trailer, a boat cover, and the bimini top, making transport and storage straightforward.

Getting a used boat home is a big hurdle. You find a great deal, then realize you need to rent a specific trailer or pay for expensive transport. That extra cost can kill a good buy.

But this boat comes with a trailer specifically for it. That means you can hook it up and go. And because it’s a very light boat, it doesn’t draw much water, so you can go in really shallow areas. It also includes a boat cover and the bimini top, so you’re ready for the water and for storage.

Here is how buying and delivery works on Commonplace: a driver inspects it, delivers it, and you get 60 minutes to test it before you pay. Every item carries a 60-day warranty.

Smart engine choice for efficiency and performance

The brand new 2025 Suzuki 30 horsepower four-stroke engine, paired with a speed prop, offers near-40hp performance with exceptional fuel efficiency.

You might think a 30 horsepower engine isn’t enough power for a fun boat. Or that you’ll be constantly filling up the tank. That kind of thinking makes you hesitate on what could be a great boat.

The owner chose this engine for a reason. He said, “a 30 horsepower with, with, with a speed prop, you know, it’s like one mile an hour difference than a 40 horsepower.” It’s a four-stroke, brand new, and he states it’s “extremely fuel efficient.” This setup gives you good speed and saves you money at the pump.

60-day warranty and all engine paperwork included

Commonplace provides a 60-day warranty on all major items, and this Boston Whaler comes with all original paperwork for its new engine and electronics.

Buying used, especially big items, always carries risk. What if something breaks right after you buy it? That fear can make you stick to new, even if it costs a lot more.

At Commonplace, we get it. That’s why we offer a 60-day warranty on all major items. You also get 60 minutes to test it out before you pay a dime. And for this boat, the owner has kept all the paperwork for the new engine and the electronics. That means peace of mind, knowing you’re covered and have the documentation you need.

Full interview transcript

Below is the full conversation with the owner of this 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport, recorded when they listed it on Commonplace. It is the actual seller interview, unedited, so you can hear first-hand why it is for sale, its condition, and what is included.

Hey, my name is Ari, I’m here at the Commonplace. I thought you listed a couple of stuff with us specifically. I was hoping to ask you a few questions that we can put in our podcast episode just to help out. Awesome, you have like five minutes now? Yeah.

Perfect. Alright, so I’ll give a quick intro and then I’ll just jump into the questions, okay? Perfect. You’re listening to the Commonplace Talk Show where we have real owners, real listings and Commonplace is where you buy and sell high value items the Safeway. We verify it, we hold the payment in escrow and we handle the delivery to your door.

And today we have a 1989 Boston Whaler 13 Sport in mint condition and let’s speak to the owner. So tell me a little bit about when you bought it and how you’ve used it and why you’re selling it. So I bought it about four years ago, I bought it from my youngest son. He was 13 at the time and it was a great first boat. First of all, like 13 foot whalers, there’s like a whole pult, if you will, you know, like there’s a, people love them, you know, like there’s like big, you know, groups of them.

It’s a very popular little boat and it’s a great, you know, it’s a great first boat. You can go anywhere with it. And, you know, to teach a young boater, you know, how to operate out on the water there, that’s, there’s nothing better than that. It’s the easiest thing to use. Absolutely.

And they haven’t changed much over the years. I mean, that’s a 1989 hull and it’s, you know, it’s awesome. Yeah, it looks awesome. So tell me like about, you know, what kind of maintenance went into it, how you’ve used it, you know, any issues that you’d want the next owner to know about? Yeah.

So I did, you know, some fiberglass repair, obviously, cause it’s a 1989, you know, it’s been around for a while. It needs some maintenance. You got to maintain the fiberglass, the, the, the road rail around the, you know, the, the border of the boat was replaced. The main thing is, is, is the engines, the power unit. Last year I put a brand new 2025 Suzuki 30 horsepower, you know, I re, you know, repowered everything and all new controls, new steering, new throttle.

I put GPS on it with a fish finder. I moved the seating in around that, that the seating in there is custom. I made it so that you can comfortably fit four people and put the bimini top on. It looks great. That’s, that’s really good.

So it looks like, it sounds like you’ve taken really good care of it. Tell me a little bit about what comes with it, you know, for the next owner what’s included, what’s not included. And then, you know, in terms of why you’re selling it, why, why are you selling it now? Okay. So my son wants to, he got into wakeboarding and he wants to take the money from that boat with some money that he’s been saving, you know, working over the summer and he wants to get himself a wakeboarding boat cause he’s really into it.

Okay. And yeah, so what comes with it, you know, the, the trailer comes with it. Yeah, I said, you know, that trailer is specifically for that little boat. It comes with a boat cover. Okay.

It comes with the bimini top. It comes with the, all the paperwork for the engine and the, and the electronics that are on there. Yeah. And yeah, that’s it. Awesome.

I mean, when you were buying this one used a couple of years ago, like what were some of the things that you were concerned about, you know, just so we can talk about it transparently, whoever is going to be looking at this, they might have concerns, you know, about buying something used and you know, it’s got a couple of years on it, but like you said, it has a new engine on it. So tell me like some of the things that you were concerned about when you were buying it that you wanted to clarify and maybe, you know, those answers would help the next owner make a purchase. No problem. All right. So so any, any, any used boat is you have to just imagine that it doesn’t have any motor on there.

Right. So like, what is it worth without a motor? You know, is it solid? Like, you know, is it, you know, is the whole solid just regardless of the motor? It was my neighbor’s boat.

He, you know, his son used it. So I’ve seen, I’ve, you know, I’ve seen the boat for a long time. Like, you know, you know, the person that’s owned this before, you know, it’s not like, and that’s, and you trusted him, you, you bought it because you knew exactly the shape that it was in. And so kind of this story, I’ve been watching the boat. You have been watching, you know, his son used the boat for years and then, and then, you know, he, he wanted to you know, use it to upgrade into, into something bigger.

And when I bought it, it had, you know, an old two stroke engine on there. And the main concern for me was, okay, I’m going to have to repower this thing eventually. So, you know, I, I bought it. I, I negotiated the price, you know, with that in mind, you know, cause repowering a boat with all the new controls is expensive. So I had to factor in the cost of the hull.

How much money did you put into it since you bought it? Um, 8,000. Okay. Wow. So you’re really, you know, passing on a lot of great value to the next owner because of how well you’ve taken care of it, the shape that it’s in and the money that you put into it.

Yeah. Yeah. Cause like, yeah, I wanted, you know, first of all, I would want the boat in that condition. You know, I think it looked great with the, um, with the, the, the, the tech decks, um, you know, like the, the faux teeth padding. And when I buy something used, I want to buy it from somebody who, who enjoyed it, used it and took care of it.

So I pass it on, you know, it’s turnkey. It’s, it’s, it’s ready to go, you know, ready to go have fun with it. Jonathan, I’m so happy we did this call because, you know, this is like the exact information that somebody that’s buying something like this used wants to hear. Um, and now we can, you know, have it publicly on the listing. Um, so anybody looking at it, I will be able to hear this and then we’ll also publish it all over our social media.

We’ll send it to you if you want to share it anywhere. Um, but this is awesome. Um, if there’s anything else you want to share about it, um, feel free. Um, if not, you know, we could, we could end it here. Yeah, no, it’s, um, it’s a great boat.

It’s a great boat. It doesn’t draw a lot of water, you know, so you can go in like really shallow water. Um, typically, you know, you have to take it out for a day. What was that? What was the question?

The fuel. How much does it cost in fuel? Oh, it’s, um, extremely fuel efficient. Like I, I couldn’t, I don’t really, I don’t, I haven’t driven enough with the new motor to tell you, but it’s like really fuel efficient. It’s a four stroke.

Number one is brand new. And you know, that 30 horsepower engine is not struggling to move that thing around. So it’s never like, you know, you’re not, you’re not like, uh, winding it out, you know, it’s, it’s, it gets up and goes, you know, nice and easy. The boat itself is very light and the prop that’s on there is a speed prop. So I could have put a 40 horsepower motor on there, but the 40 horsepower motor is a lot heavier than the 30.

And then the boats kind of like doing a wheelie a little bit. You gotta, you almost have to like counterweight it, you know, you have to like move, move the seating up a little bit. So the thing doesn’t always, you know, the nose doesn’t always want to come up. So a 30 horsepower with, with, with a speed prop, you know, it’s like one mile an hour difference than a 40 horsepower. So yeah, it makes perfect sense.

Well, Jonathan, thank you very much. Um, this is awesome. I’m excited for this to go live on the listing and, you know, I’m sure, I’m sure we’ll help you sell it soon. So I appreciate you doing it. Very cool.

And, uh, yeah, we’ll, we’ll keep you posted on, on all the interest in it and you know, the pickup process is super easy. Um, we just go run through when we do the pickup, uh, we pay you upon pickup and then we deliver it. We set it up to wherever the buyer needs it. Um, delivery as well. Very cool, man.

Uh, yeah, it’s great. I hope it goes to a, uh, I hope it goes to somebody who really enjoys it. Yeah, me too. Well, thanks for doing this, Jonathan. Have a great weekend.

Thank you. Bye.
