Hello? Hi, it’s Krista. I’m sorry, I have no idea why it didn’t answer. Hey Krista, how’s it going? Great.
I’m sitting here with my husband Matthew, the other involved party. Okay, perfect. Awesome. So I’m just going to do a quick intro to the episode, and is it okay that we record you? Sure.
Okay, and then we’ll jump right into the question. Okay. Alright, you’re listening to the Common Place Talk Show, where we have real owners, real listings, and common places where you buy and sell high-value items the safe way, like the swim spa. It’s 17 feet with a heater and cover, and it’s in Menlo Park, California. It’s listed at an amazing price, a ridiculously low price, and we’re just going to get some answers to some of the questions that a lot of you are probably interested in. So without further ado, why don’t you give me a quick summary of what it is you’re selling and why you’re selling it? As you mentioned, it’s a 17-foot swim spa, so it has a current that runs and lets you easily practice swimming. We did a lot of training for triathlons when we first bought the pool, and so we’ve used it for that a lot.
But I have to also say the kids loved it, because we had, you know, 7- to 10-year-old kids who would put it in their tube in the current and play in it in the summertime. So we got tons and tons of use from the pool, both for fitness and for fun. It can even be heated to spa temperature, so you have like a giant hot tub out there to jump in with friends. Why are we selling it, you asked? It’s just we’re no more kids at home, and we are no longer doing triathlons, so we’re just done with it.
Okay, that’s a great reason. And just to confirm, I did some research. It looks like this could be the E700 from Endless Pools, is that right? Do you happen to remember the model? Yep, the EP17 is what I’m looking at.
Okay, it could be that they maybe changed some of the naming practices since 2014, but this is a 17-foot model for anyone curious. And do you happen to have any information about the wave or propulsion system? Because a lot of people are interested in that for swimming purposes. What kind of information? I mean, it has a remote control that you use to change the speed, so you’re able to alter the speed from a very casual swim to very rapid, very difficult to swim in the current, just by using the remote control.
So that’s super handy. But are you looking for more technical information about the motor? Well, I just wanted to note that this swim spa actually has more of the higher-end propulsion system. Some of these swim spas have jets on them, and it’s less of a natural current, and this feels a lot more like you’re swimming in a river. Right, it’s quite a wide, I don’t know exactly how wide, but you know, two feet wide motor that’s pushing that current out, so it’s quite a wide current that you’re in, so it’s not hard to stay within it.
But I would not call it a jet. It’s definitely a motor that’s churning out a nice river-like current. Exactly. And for anybody that, you know, is getting a swim spa for the first time and is interested to kind of better understand what it’s like swimming in a swim spa versus like a swimming pool or a lake or a river, how would you describe it? Well, you don’t have to do any flip turns, so that’s nice.
You can do all the different strokes that you would do in a regular pool. You’re just stationary is the difference, so you’re not moving as you’re doing this, which is why it’s important the motor can change speed so you can change speed of the swim. But I swim a lot in open water and in pools. Everything is different, of course, but this to me feels very much like swimming in a pool, except you’re not doing flip turns. Yeah, amazing.
And then on the maintenance side of things, you know, you’ve had this for a while. It’s still in use. You’re still using it. You’ve used it quite a bit, so it’s in great condition, but tell me a little bit about what it takes to maintain this so that you can use it and not have any issues. Yeah.
My husband’s very anal with care and maintenance of things, so that’s why it’s in such good shape, and it has a very nice cover. We went high end with the cover so that we would have something that would last, so the cover goes all the way around the edges, so the pool itself has just been very well protected over time. Every time we use it, of course, we open it up, and if there’s any debris in it, we use one of those regular swimming pool nets to skim the top and get anything out that might have somehow stuck in there. And other than that, you know, every once in a while, probably like monthly, we check the pH and make sure the balance looks pretty good. When it doesn’t have frequent use, it doesn’t matter.
The water doesn’t really change, and it’s perfectly fine, and it’s clean and chlorinated to some level. If you’re using it a lot, you need to use a little bit of chlorine to keep the pH right, but we have a very simple little glass measure, and you check to see that the color’s right, so the chlorine level is right. And if it’s not, dump a little bit in and let the jet stir it around, but it’s actually been very, very easy. I was nervous about that, and it’s not hard because it’s only 17 feet. It’s not a giant, giant pool, so it’s manageable to keep the water at a beautiful clarity and clean.
Amazing. And I know that this was a while ago, but if you recall at all, what was the like installation process like, you know, in terms of the plumbing, the electrical, you know, the delivery, anything there that you remember? And were there any issues along the way, you know, over the last decade where you had to call in an expert to either replace something or fix something? No, we had an issue with our own power because all of our power in our house and everything went out for once, so we did have an electrician out that time. I don’t think the pool was impacted, other than we had to get the power back on.
There is a string of lights around the outside of the pool that doesn’t work now, and they’re just decorative, so they’re a little small light that would turn pink, I think, when you turned it on, and those don’t function now. So we didn’t say anything about decorative lights in the listing because they are not, they don’t work. As far as the installation goes, I mean, you listed in the video that you sent me exactly how it went. You know, we did have to have an electrician. We had to have a hole because we actually put it about a foot into the ground, so we had that hole dug.
Like you do have to have, it’s very heavy, obviously, so you have to have the right foundation for it that is cement, that is very sturdy. So the things that I read on your website and in your video were exactly spot on as far as what we had to do to get the pool installed. Okay, perfect. I think that’s, you know, for the most part, pretty much everything.
Is there anything else, you know, maybe tips or tricks of owning this the right way and not having any issues like you haven’t had anything, you know, really that you brought up. But, you know, is there any other information you’d like to tell over to the next owner that might be helpful? We have loved having it. It was perfect to have, you know, over the course of time that we had it and this one’s in great shape. So, you know, I wish it hadn’t cost as much as it did in the beginning.
You know, we paid, I think, $36,000 for it and then, you know. And the prices definitely have gone up, so today a similar model is in the $60,000. So it’s just, I mean, we’re basically just at a wash here just so that someone else can have it and use it when it’s in such great condition, so I think this is a great deal. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a really good price, so that was the only part that was hard to swallow was the price, but it has been worth it.
It was really, really great pull. Amazing. Okay, I think that’s it. Any chance you happen to know what the cost is of running it, just like the electricity or like the heating element of it? We have solar, so I think actually our solar helps with that, so it doesn’t cost that much, but I don’t know.
